These Putters Inspire Confidence on the Moss

The Putter
These Putters Inspire Confidence on the Moss

Let's face it, putting is all about confidence.
When you look down at that little white ball sitting between a few inches to many feet away from a very small hole in the ground you need a wand in your hands that looks like it wants to perform.
Bobby Jones was one of the greatest putters of the game, rolling the ball over gnarly carpets that were running about seven on the Stimpmeter with Calamity Jane, a flat stick that look like his grandmother had stirred stew with it when he was a tyke. Putters have come a long way since then--face-balancing, multi-metals, inserts, perimeter weighting, face grooves, over-sized grips, alignment aids, mallets, blades, belly putters, long putters--you name it. All of this technology and design attempting to do what old Calamity Jane did so loyally for decades… put the ball into the cup with regularity.
Yes, today's putters are designed and weighted to deliver a true roll of the golf ball toward the intended target and prevent a twisting of the club in our hands, which will help the putt stay on line. Yet the most important aspect of a putter is how it feels in your hands. Equipment companies have created a magical lineup of stylish, beautiful to-look-at putters, leaving you no excuse why you can't find the right stick to knock strokes off your score. It may mean going to your local green grass pro shop or golf retail outlet and trying a few on for size, or even getting fit for a putter just like you would a set off woods of or irons, but it will time well spent.
Check out these models to get an idea of how to prevent three-putts and start making those 25-footers and taking more money from your buddies.

Bobby Grace AMG 18
www.BobbyGracePutters.com • $225

Unique Features: The AMG-18 Blade is a heel-shafted design milled from solid steel used to win major championships. The back flange slopes are very pronounced and further enhanced by customized weight ports. The AMG 18 features a multi-rebound radial face, an insert with polymer grooves for increased over-spin and Grace's patented tri sweet spot technology that allows the golfer to miss the sweet spot yet still maintain control over direction and distance.

Tester Comments: Awesome feel. You can tell this is a quality putter the first time you pick one up … sits nice and square, which makes it easy to align. The roll is outstanding.

Boccieri Golf K-4 Mid
www.BoccieriGolf.com • $120

Unique Features: The K4-M is a toe droop blade with a short slant neck hosel and a half-shaft of offset. The putter is constructed of Stainless Steel and has a CNC milled face and is offered in a Black PVD or Bronze Black Nickel finish. Each Mid-Weight uses a proprietary shaft with a 200 gram weight inserted in the butt end of the shaft. This is claimed to provide the necessary weight for more control of the stroke and produce a balance point 75% higher than conventional putters to eliminate a "wristy" action.

Tester Comments: Was harder to yank or push off line although it was a little harder to control distance until I got used to weight … Felt like transition from back to forward in the stroke was smoother.

Nike Method Midnight
www.Nike.com • $249

Unique Features: The Method Midnight features Nike's visibly distinctive polymetal groove technology which is claimed to impart a forward roll almost immediately after impact. While most traditional steel faced putters start the ball with backspin causing the ball to initially bounce, the polymetal groove technology starts the ball with forward spin to minimize bounce and keep putts on line. The Nike Method Midnight putter is available in new milled head shapes with a dark chrome finish and will be offered in three new models: Method Midnight 006, 007, and 008.

Tester Comments: Ball really rolls nicely off the face with a great forward roll … Beautiful looking putters … These rival any putter I ever tried including a Cameron.

Odyssey Metal X 1
www.OdysseyGolf.com • $149

Unique Features
:The latest offering from one of the pioneers of "insert" putters; this is the first Odyssey putter with a fully textured face. A urethane dampening layer backs an aluminum face plate that is covered with oval dimples. The dimples are designed to create friction between the ball and face, lowering the ball's launch angle and creating faster forward roll.

Tester Comments: Ball rolls true once it is hit and price is great … Compares favorably to more expensive putters on market … Ball hugs the green with this putter!! Solid on short putts … I think because of the face and the whole concept of the putter itself, the ball seems to roll farther with less power.

Ping Milled Anser 2
www.Ping.com • $299

Unique Features: The Ping Anser Milled Putter pays tribute to Karsten Solheim's original Anser putter head, the winningest design in golf history. Each new model is fully machined using 303 stainless steel. By offering different hosel configurations, engineers made every Anser to fit a particular putting path. Golfers swing the putter on one of three paths: slight arc, strong arc or straight-back, straight-through. The Anser 2 is mid-toe-balanced for players whose putting path is a slight arc.

Tester Comments: A true classic! Excellent response off the face! Sweet soft feel on contact! That unmistakable sound you will only get from a Ping Anser! … Anser 2 has just the right balance to make a fluid stroke every time … Ping has produced a real gem!

The red insert produces a quicker roll off the face to help you master slower greens. The deep black PVD finish minimizes glare and provides added confidence at address.

Tester Comments: Enjoyed trying different inserts, liked the black for the greens we tried putters on, but can see how it would be beneficial to be able t change inserts for different speed greens … Nice look and consistent roll.
